I just realized that I didn't post any pictures of the quilt I use at the top of my blog. I actually made it last year for a gal who saved her favorite uncle's ties after he passed away. It is an original design of my own, and I had such a sense of accomplishment after it was finished. No pattern, the quilt just evolved all by itself. :)
The Process:
I first washed & dried all of the ties, then took each apart and ironed interfacing to the back to stabilize each prior to any cutting. it's amazing how much fabric goes into each tie!
I used my handy little Dresden Plate tool to cut each of the interfaced-ties into petals for my flowers.
Here's a picture of the petals after cutting them out.
Next each 'petal' is sewn into a point to make a finished edge. I use the little wooden turner to make sure each point is crisp. This is where I start to get excited because I can see the flower starting to come together. :)
Next I laid out my petals into the order they look best in, then sew the petals together.
Here's one of my flowers! Pretty cool, huh?
I continued to repeat this process a few more times until I had all the sections that I needed. The picture below shows how I "audition" what color background would look best.
And a few more pictures of the finished project...

The final product!

I love this quilt. I belong to a church quilting group and we have trying to find a pattern for all the ties we have been given. I think this is it. May we copy?
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you like my pattern. Thanks so much for asking if you may use it! It's an original design, so if you'd be using it for any type of fundraiser, I'd appreciate if you'd just be sure to note that on the information, along with my name. :) I'd love to see the finished product!
DeleteThank you so very much. Yes it is a fundrasier for our group. Would you like you name and Sew to Remember on flyers or just one or the other? Thought we might put quilt by our quilting group, original design by:???

Hi Wanda! However you'd like to do it would be perfectly fine by me. :)
ReplyDeleteTrina, may I ask the measuements of this quilt? Is this a wall hanging or a bed quilt? We are trying to make a queen size quilt for our fundraiser. I can almost guess te dimentions of the blocks but I don't trust my judgement too much any more. The ladies were so thrilled when they saw this design, that I thought they might start cutting right then! haha
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Wanda
He he he... well tell them that's just what I did! I "wing" all my quilts, and each one is an original (never really been good at patterns). This was a larger wallhanging. :) I CAN tell you I used the Dresden Plate template, and made the petals with the biggest option. I believe the quilt was around 60"/65"-ish?? To make it larger you could always add additional borders, or possibly another set of petals in the corners?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. Planning is starting. Quilt expected to be finished by late Winter. Hopefully before that. Will send a picture of the finished and maybe the Quilt in progress, if I can figure out how to get this camera to download it. Oh well, one of my grandchildren will know how. Thanks again. We LOVE this design.
